Is there any online coverage (blogs, spots, call-ins)?
It's not our focus, but in the past racers have carried SPOT devices and were tracked on the GDMBR general tracker. Callins can be found on on mtbcast.com under Great Divide Race. Also look for discussions on bikepacking.net.
What will the start date be for 2010, 2011 and beyond?
The GDR starts the third Friday in June. So, June 17, 2011, June 15, 2012, June 21, 2013, et cetera.
Why no Canada?
We suggest you ride the Canadian section of the GDMBR as a prologue / warm up. It's a good way to get into the right mindset, as well as do last minute gear selection and body checks before the clock starts ticking. However, it is not part of the GDR's border to border race.
What is the difference between the TD and the GDR?
TD requires the Canadian prologue, allows cell phones and provides SPOT tracking. The GDR was conceived as a low key, grassroots, border to border event. Organized by racers, for racers, with the emphasis on racing. It will continue that way.
How do I sign up?
You can go to the contact page and submit your name and contact info, or just meet us at the start.
How much does the GDR cost?
That depends. There is no entry fee, but 2-4 weeks off work, travel, batteries and thousands of calories of food each day, bike and supplies can be expensive. Expect to spend on average $1500 for the trip.
What do you do in case of an emergency with a racer?
You are responsible for yourself and your own safety. Please have an emergency plan in place.
Are there bears on the route?
Yes. Bears have been encountered in every
state along the route--especially Montana. Some racers carry bear protection. Check out this site for info on playing safe in bear country. (Bear Tips)
Does GDR have a tracking system?
Nope. We do encourage racers to carry a tracker (SPOT) or data logger (GPS) to record their ride, but they are not required.
Can I stay at a friends house along the route?
No. You must use only commercial services that are available to everyone.
Can I have a friend or a race fan deliver supplies to me along the route?
No. You must use only commercial services that are available to everyone. You may have a friend ship you supplies through a commercial carrier to a commercial address. If you are from out of the country, you may want to have the phone number for a bike shop somewhere in the US that can ship you supplies.
Are GPS units allowed?
Yes.
Can I attach a sail to my bike?
What part of "under your own power" don't you understand?
